A Helping Hand (now with more links!)

One of the mainstays of my little corner of the internets is Calliope. She’s always there for others – celebrating with them when they achieve their dreams and mourning when those dreams come crashing to the ground. And – she’s a full time caregiver for her grandmother, who has alzheimers, which is a valiant, but decidely unremunerative occupation.

In the meantime, she’s been on her own quest for motherhood.  IUI after IUI did nothing – and still she perservered. The dream finally seemed like it was in reach when she was chosen to be a donor for a shared IVF cycle. She passed all the pre-cycle testing with flying colors. And then, today, as she sleeps on a friend’s couch in a strange city, undergoing stims and monitoring – a routine blood test for hepC came back positive.

Despite the fact that she was negative in the pre-cycle testing – and this is 99.99999% likely a false positive – the clinic has canceled the shared donor cycle even before doing a second test. They will let her continue, assuming that her repeat test is negative – if she foots the bill.

There’s no way this woman can do that. And if anyone ought to be a mom, it’s Cali.

If you possibly can, please go to her blog and donate to her paypal account. She needs to pull a lot of money together very quickly in order to be able to continue and every little bit helps.

Please

Won’t you please donate?

If you donated… click here – and thanks.

Tent camping with an 11-month old (how did that happen?): Yea, Nay, and if so, How?

A few points of clarification… and more questions for those who’ve done this:

  • Absolutely car camping.  We’re crazy, but not that crazy.
  • Where did baby sleep? (P’ito is not used to co-sleeping, and I don’t think our tent will hold a pack n’ prison and us)
  • What did baby sleep in to stay warm?

Oh and some cute pictures of said 11-month old, just because.  Big thanks to Minnesota Nice who knitted this awesome hat.

Hat, actually on the head! Watch out! Hat, with two seconds to go!

I can’t even say how blessed we are to have this boy home. Please, please – go to Cheri’s site and read her explanations of the shit that is hitting the fan in Guatemala and what you can do to help. And then please, please – call your senator, call your congressperson – do SOMETHING. Thanks, from the bottom of my heart and Pepito’s cheeks.

Because even I was getting sick of that post

August 29, 2007 at 12:10 am | In Linky Love, M'ijo | 16 Comments

I wasn’t going to post until I had something deep and meaty and thought provoking to write about.

But then I thought I’d better get off my tush and post, otherwise my next post would also need to be titled “Has it really been a month already?”

In my defense, we’ve been really busy around here.

Pepito’s adorable friend Garin (and his mom!) came to visit:

Looking Together

Garin & P'ito

Kiss

We went to the event.

Me & Master P.

me and mrp

Check out the teeth in that second picture. And yet, all he wants to eat is puree. Sigh. I am so jealous of people whose kids will devour hunks of banana and avocado. This one is going to be thirty and still craving E@rth’s Best Turkey Vegetable Dinner.

Speaking of eating:

We got some very cute presents from T&A in flat city (thankyouthankyouthankyou)

Awesome Bib

Pre-meal, clearly. He’s looking at me like, “why mama, are you holding that camera instead of wielding the spoon of sweet sweet Turkey Vegetable Dinner deliverance?”

Bob Dylan Wannabe

This onesie is true more often than not, alas.

Everybody was kung fu fighting...

This shirt is already appropriate. I mean… look at that kick!

Acrobat

As always, lots more pictures friends-only on flickr.

Other things keeping me busy:

Working a full day and then driving an hour and twenty minutes home. Will NOT miss that commute.
Packing.
Obsessing about the situation in Guatemala. This really deserves its own post.
Packing, Sorting, Yardsaling, Throwing OUT.
And. My mother-out-law is visiting. For EIGHT days.
Did I mention, packing?

A question: how do you pack? Are you a pack-it-all-the-last-week-person, or are you a pack a few boxes a day for several weeks person? And what would you say to your partner when she tells you: “I am irrationally angry that you packed all the nice bowls away and now I have to serve the salad in this metal mixing bowl.”

Hint: Yes, that’s irrational, dear = not a good answer.

p.s. A very overdue congrats to Bri and Wes who are now the proud parents of a bee-u-tiful boy. Congrats as well to… Tam, Andrea (even though her child eats solid foods and I hate her), Jo (you have to read her post – it’s beautiful), Barb and Holly – who are all either home from Guatemala with their babies or very very close to it.

And keep your fingers crossed for the ones in waiting: J., Cali and the pee-stick-poem-writing Missed Conceptions, and on a more serious note, the babies, families adoptive and first, and staff of the hogar.

Did I miss you? All omissions are absolutely unintentional, I swear, and can be blamed on Mr. “What do you mean, 4:30am isn’t a good time to play?”

But it’s for a good cause…

I have sworn, up, down, and sideways, not to buy any more non-essential baby items.

Bottles are essential. Formula is essential.  Diapers are very very essential.

Adorable baby clothing is not essential, especially not with my mother on the loose.

Why have I sworn this? Because we are now the owners of two houses, in two different cities, g-d help us. But that’s a subject worthy of its own post.  Although while I’m on this subject, I must send a HUGE thank you out to Miss Missed Conceptions, who accompanied Pili & Pepito to the close on house #2, 2.5 hours away, and entertained said boy while Pili signed our lives away. I hear that you are a champion baby wrangler, hon.

But the makers of babyrounds are having a saaaale. And they’re donating every penny they receive for the purchase of said extremely cute pants to my bloggity friend Erin and her husband, to help them afford their adoption after having their pockets sucked dry by IVF.

These are some seriously cute clothes, folks. And yes, I um (look away Pili, look away) might have bought a pair for Pepito.  Hie ye yonder folks, and shop shop shop.

Many topics, one post

Does this happen to anyone else? I have Big Serious Bloggable Ideas float through my head when I’m driving or showering or singing the baby to sleep with the same two lullabies whose lyrics I actually know… and then by the time I get to the computer, I am brain dead, and it’s about all I can do to post a few pictures or cute P’ito stories. Things I Really Do Want to Write About Include:

  • How I think having diabetes might help me understand how it feels to be adopted
  • Feeling guilty about how going back to work wasn’t as hard as everyone said it would be
  • How utterly bizarre it is to hear the same two lullabies my parents sang to me coming out of my mouth
  • The sheer physicality of my love for Pepito
  • 23 interesting facts about me (I believe I’ve been tagged for the 8 facts meme twice and the 7 facts meme once)
  • My anxiety about the not-too-far-off move to MUCDTR and how it will impact our relationship and how I deal with it by totally sticking my head in the sand until there is sandpaper in my eardrums
  • Pepito’s first pediatrician visit (he had an ear infection! we had no idea!)

Any requests? I’m more likely to actually write in response to someone else’s prompting than out of the desire to hear myself talk…

On another note: random parenting questions

  • How much water do you put in the bath tub and how do you control a wriggly child in said tub? P’ito loves baths, but hates the little baby tubs. His favorite thing is to bathe with one or both of us, but that’s not always possible. Tonight he climbed off the little baby sling and started crawling around the tub.In the BathThen he managed to get himself into a downward dog position in the tub! I almost had a heart attack.
  • Do you love your stroller? If so, what is it, and why do you love it?
  • What to do about a vague cat pee smell in the baby’s room? I can’t exactly find the source and I don’t know which cat is at fault – he’s tormenting all of them. And is there anything we can do to help the cats and the baby learn to love one another?
  • In Pursuit

Some P’ito milestones from the past week: Stands with a parent helping him! Sits on his knees – is almost pulling up to standing… and I came home from work today to discover that he has become downward dog baby! There are more pictures on flickr.

And some thank you notes…

Jen, Cait & Natalie sent us a fuzzibunz diaper and a hemp insert

Diaper from Jen & Cait!

Thank you for inducting us into the cult helping us understand the confusing world of cloth.

And the Family O sent an adorable outfit (onesie? what is this thing called?) for P’ito

Thank you! He was indeed.

A boo & some cheers

Boo: President Bush, I don’t support your dumbass war. If I had any choice at all, my tax dollars would not be supporting the murder – that’s right – murder – of our young men and women and of innocent Iraqis who have the nerve to do something ridiculous like go out and buy groceries at the market. So how do you justify telling me that my tax dollars can’t be spent on stem cell research that could save my life, because “Destroying human life [embryos which have not been transferred into a human uterus, let alone successfully implanted and developed into blobs with beating hearts] in the hopes of saving human life is not ethical.” Now remind me what the hell this war is supposedly about?

Cheer: To the NYS Assembly, which passed a bill to allow same-sex couples equal access to marriage by a bipartisan vote of 85 to 61. State laws don’t grant us access to the most important legal benefits of marriage, but they’re certainly a step in the right direction. C’mon NYS Senate!

And Another Cheer: To the much deserving Sofia, who is OUT OF PGN! Hip hip hooray!

And Another Long Overdue Cheer: For Dis, who very generously donated a Children’s Place gift card to Operation Lifeboat. I’ve only been meaning to thank her for, oh a few weeks now!

But don’t you fret: Dannielynn pouts just like Anna. Just in case you were worried.

I’ve been meaning to do this for several days now, but a fabulously funny real life friend of mine has started a blog.  Please go over to Missed Conceptions and give her some looooove.

Operation LifeBoat

June 8, 2007 at 11:24 pm | In Linky Love | 6 Comments

I have been known to whine about our adoption situation. But the truth is, it ain’t that bad. I’ve had the privilege of getting to know both Erin and Cheri in person, and they are both such kind and generous people – as well as great moms. They are both down in Antigua right now – fostering their babies away from their families and homes.

Erin & Azucen@ Cheri & Eliana

They are also stuck in a bureaucratic catch22 that is hard to even begin to explain. Essentially, Erin, Cheri, and their families are caught up in a war of wills between the mayor’s office in Guatemala City, and my dear friends in PGN. They just received news of a major setback that means that they will likely be living in Antigua for at least another SIX months.

The babies are quickly approaching their 1st birthdays and Cheri & Erin have NO IDEA WHEN they will be able to return home with their daughters to America.

Nu… why am I telling you this? I’m so glad you asked…

Can you imagine the financial burden these families are facing? Cheri & Erin are making major sacrifices to be apart from their husbands & families. They have accepted legal responsibility as the foster parents of their daughters and cannot leave. They’re away from their work (and Erin is her family’s primary breadwinner) and are paying rent & utilities & all monthly expenses in Guatemala – which ain’t cheap. Plus, y’know, the mortgage back home.  Yeah, that old thing.

A bunch of fellow adoptive parents have gotten together. Our goal is pretty simple: We’d love to be able to pay their rent & expenses in Guatemala for at least a month or longer. They have never asked for help of any kind, by the way… but we know they are struggling.

We’re calling this Operation LifeBoat because Azucen@ and Eliana are the babies stuck in the same crappy boat… and we’d like to help bail it out.

The fabulous Tricia has put together a raffle to encourage people to donate and help out Erin & Cheri. She has $150 in gift cards to be won. And I’m adding in a $30 TarZhay gift card as well. And… something else is in the works from a friend who works at a very nice children’s clothing store…

Leave an encouraging message for Erin & Cheri here or at Tricia’s and you’ll get one chance at winning a gift card. Click on the button below and donate what you can through paypal and you’ll get SIX CHANCES at winning. You’ll also get a boatload of good karma.

ETA: I can’t seem to get the button to work… go to Tricia’s to donate!

Nothing like a present to cheer you up

I have to take time away from my pityparty to thank some wonderful friends who have made me smile lately… first of all, all of your comments, which made me feel not so small and beaten down by the world. And second, some gifts which arrived in my mailbox recently and totally made my day.

My fabulouso friend Mel sent GB these hand-me-down sweaters, this sweet little lovie doll, and these fantastic rainbow leg warmer things. I’m not sure she wants the whole world peeking in on her family blog, so I won’t link to it, but she has a super cute boy who is a few months older than GB.

I got to meet up with the marvelous Menita recently, and she surprised me with the world’s softest teddybear. Oh yeah, this boy is going to be deprived.

Finally, I got two really cool books from my Secret Blog Pal. One for me – which I DEVOURED in a single night of lost sleep – and one of my absolute favorite kid books for GB. Ferdinand is such a great story showing that boys can be gentle too.

books

Thanks friends. You rock.

p.s. Re, pityparty: I think I just need to step away from the computer. I’m home sick with a massive snotty head cold, and frantically refreshing my email every five minutes to see if: 1) we have gotten our may photos – everyone else from our agency has! 2) my director has written back to the email letting him know that if he wants me to, I would be happy to stay on for at least another month at my current job (this one is giving me a serious case of the oh holy craps) and 3) the real estate lawyer has passed on the name of a property management company for me to contact in case we decide to rent out the cute little house in MUCDTR instead of losing the $ and screwing over our sellers by pulling out…
